Website redesign without losing traffic or leads

A new website can wipe out rankings built over years. A step-by-step plan to refresh the design without dropping in search.

The most expensive redesign mistake is not a bad colour but lost search traffic. The site looks better, and a month later leads are down: old URLs return 404, copy was cut, meta tags vanished.

We are moving the Evolve website from Webflow to custom code ourselves and went through it step by step. This is the order that protects traffic.

1. Record what you have now

  • Export every URL from the sitemap, Yandex Webmaster and Google Search Console
  • Mark pages that bring traffic and leads
  • Save the title, description and H1 of those pages
  • Record current rankings for key queries

Without this, there is nothing to compare after launch and no way to explain a drop.

2. Map old URLs to new ones

Give every old URL a new address. If a page disappears, pick the closest match and set a 301 redirect to it. Pages that brought traffic must never be removed silently.

When we removed an article from our blog, we redirected its URL to the matching case study instead of leaving a 404.

3. Keep what the site ranked for

Redesigns often cut copy “for cleanliness”. If a page ranked for a query, its core content must stay: headings, answers, service description. Design changes presentation, not substance.

4. Check the technical side before launch

  • All redirects are 301, no chains
  • Canonical and hreflang for language versions
  • Sitemap and robots.txt on the new site
  • Speed and responsiveness on real phones
  • Structured data and Open Graph

Launch on a staging domain closed to indexing and complete the checklist before switching the domain.

5. Watch the site after launch

For the first two to four weeks, check crawl errors in Webmaster and Search Console, rankings and leads. Small fluctuations are normal; if a page drops and does not recover, compare it with the old version from step 1.

In short

A lossless redesign is not just new visuals but a URL map, redirects, preserved content and post-launch monitoring. Planning a refresh or a move away from Webflow? Tell us about the project and we will start with an audit of your current site.
